Primary Session

Matthew 17:1-9

Opening Prayer

Let us pray.
Dear Jesus,
thank you for your love and friendship.
Help us to grow as your followers during Lent.
In the name of Jesus Christ we pray.
Amen.

Opening Life Reflection

On this Second Sunday of Lent we are called to grow as followers of Jesus. During Lent we are reminded to forgive others, to help those in need and to pray. To begin, brainstorm with the children what they would like to do better during Lent. Write down their responses. Discuss:

  • How can God help you do things better?
  • Who helps you to follow Jesus?
  • How does the season of Lent help us to grow as followers of Jesus?

Allow time for discussion. God helps to make everything better. The season of Lent helps us to grow as God’s children.

Listening to the Word of God

In today’s Gospel listen to find out what happens to Jesus on the mountaintop.

Read Matthew 17:1-9.

Allow for silence.

Scripture Discussion Starters

  • What happens to Jesus on the mountaintop?
  • Who appears to Jesus and the disciples?
  • What does the voice of God say?
  • What do the disciples do?

Scripture Background

Provide 2-3 minutes of background information on the readings using the Catechist Background section.

In today’s Gospel Jesus shines brilliantly on the mountaintop before his disciples. The divinity of Jesus is revealed. The dazzling image of Jesus on the mountaintop gives the disciples a glimpse of the everlasting glory that awaits those who follow Christ. Sharing in Christ’s life includes sharing in his suffering. The brilliant vision of Jesus transfigured gives the disciples strength to face the struggles that lie ahead.

The brilliant vision of Jesus shown in today’s Gospel helps all followers of Jesus find hope in times of suffering. The light of God’s glory awaits all those who are baptized in Christ.

Questions for Deeper Reflection

  • How would you describe Jesus on the mountaintop?
  • Why does the change in Jesus give his followers hope?
  • How does today’s Gospel reading relate to your baptism?

[If you are not going to continue with the doctrinal discussion, proceed to the Gospel in Life.]

Doctrinal Discussion Starters

Christ, Our Hope of Glory

As human beings we are drawn to the glory of God. God alone is holy. And yet, God’s children can participate in the holiness of God. Holiness begins with a person’s sense of wonder and awe before the greatness of God.

In today’s Gospel the disciples lower their heads in awe when they hear the voice of God. Jesus tells the disciples not to be afraid. As children of God, we are called to listen for God’s voice and respond without fear.

  • How do we learn about the greatness of God?
  • What does it mean to be in awe of God?
  • How does the Church help us to live as God’s children?

The Gospel in Life

How can Jesus help you to shine brightly before others this Lent?
